The Shrinking World of L. Ron Hubbard
First broadcast in 1968 this a real ‘golden oldie’. It quickly becomes obvious why Hubbard was hesitant to give interviews.
The Big Story
The first episode features an undercover journalist infiltrating all the way to the UK headquarters. The second episode is a detailed insider description of how Scientology pressures people into giving up money, including testimony on how members are instructed to fraudulently apply for loans for Scientology courses.
Panorama 1987
Reporter John Penycate presents the first BBC Panorama documentary on Scientology. This piece is probably most famous for being the first broadcast of that OT3 cartoon.
Panorama 2007
Featuring John ‘exploding tomato’ Sweeny. Tommy ‘brainwashing is a crime against humanity’ Davis may have succeed in making the BBC reporter lose it, but in the process managed to prove to the whole world just how creepy the Church of Scientology really is.
Panorama 2010
John Sweeney returns for another look into the Church of Scientology. You might have though the Church of Scientology had learned from Sweeney’s last outing, but you would be wrong. There is even more stalking, intimidation and private investigators this time around. What makes this piece particularly interesting is the presence of Mike Rinder, a former top spokesperson for Scientology who has now left the organisation. He talks to Sweeney about what went on behind the scenes during the last Panorama investigation.
Secret Lives
A look into the life of L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of Scientology. Rather unsurprisingly the truth differs from the description given by Hubbard’s followers.
Foreign Pieces
French Piece – Above The Law?
A look at how Scientology subverts the French judicial system.
Spanish Piece – Undercover
A good old-fashioned piece of investigative journalism. One of the best screenshots from inside the cult ever made. Don’t let the fact that this piece is subtitled put you off.
Australia – Nick Xenophon
Here is the full speech on Scientology given by Nick Xenophon, senator for South Australia, to the Australian senate. Delivered 17th November 2009, this is best overviews of the Scientology enterprise ever composed.
Germany – Until Nothing Remains
This is a full-length feature film on the topic on Scientology, and the effect it has on families. The processes, auditing sessions and training routines featured in the film are very accurate. For example the scene where Sarah is manipulating the older girl like a doll to look and touch the wall is one of the Scientology Upper Indoc TRs, where the student learns to ‘control another body’. This is powerful viewing.
Canada – JE Investigates
This piece has a bit of everything. Undercover footage, journalists confronting Scientology spokespeople, victim testimony and even a look at one of Scientology’s front groups Applied Scholastics.
